A Bright LED Fixture Is Not Always a Quality Fixture

What facility managers should understand before investing in a lighting upgrade

Recently, while reviewing different LED lighting products and speaking with organizations about their past retrofit experiences, I noticed a recurring problem.

Many buyers judge an LED fixture by one immediate question:

Is it bright?

If the fixture turns on, looks brighter than the old fluorescent light and has a clean appearance, it is often considered a good product. Customers may even give it a five-star review shortly after installation.

But brightness on the first day tells us very little about how that fixture will perform after one, three or five years.

In commercial and institutional lighting projects, product quality affects much more than appearance. It influences energy savings, maintenance requirements, occupant comfort, system reliability and the actual return on the retrofit investment.

Why initial brightness can be misleading

A low-quality fixture can still appear very bright when it is first installed. In some cases, excessive brightness may even make the product seem more powerful.

However, an effective lighting project is not about producing the greatest amount of light possible. It is about delivering the appropriate illumination for the space while controlling glare, energy consumption and unnecessary operating hours.

A properly designed fixture should distribute light consistently across the space. It should not create visible bright spots, dark areas, uncomfortable glare or noticeable differences in colour between fixtures.

These details may not be obvious to someone purchasing lighting for the first time, but they become much more noticeable when hundreds of fixtures are installed throughout a school, office, healthcare facility, warehouse or residential building.

The real cost of an inexpensive fixture

The purchase price of the fixture is only one part of a lighting project.

A commercial retrofit can also include:

  • Electrical installation
  • Lifts or specialized equipment
  • Access to occupied spaces
  • Disposal of old lamps and ballasts
  • Programming of sensors or controls
  • Inspection and project coordination
  • Future maintenance and replacement labour

If a fixture or its driver fails prematurely, the organization may need to repeat part of this work. Even when a replacement fixture is covered under warranty, the labour, disruption and administrative time may not be included.

This is why the least expensive fixture does not always produce the lowest-cost project.

A quality product should protect the original investment by continuing to provide consistent output, colour and control over time.

What does LED product quality actually mean?

Professional lighting quality should be evaluated across several areas.

1. Performance over time

LEDs do not always fail in the same way as traditional lamps. Their light output may gradually decline, or another component, such as the driver or control, may fail before the LED reaches its expected life.

One commonly used measure is L70, which estimates when a product will produce approximately 70% of its original light output. However, a lifetime claim should be supported by recognized testing rather than appearing only as a number on a product box.

2. Efficiency, not wattage alone

Wattage tells us how much electricity a fixture consumes. It does not tell us how effectively that electricity is converted into usable light.

That is why lumens per watt, or lm/W, is important. A higher-efficacy fixture can provide the required illumination using less power.

However, efficacy should still be considered together with light distribution, operating temperature, controls and the needs of the space. A highly efficient fixture is only valuable when the light is delivered where it is needed.

3. Consistent light quality

The colour temperature and appearance of the light should remain consistent across the installation.

In a large room or corridor, even a small difference between fixtures can make the installation look uneven. Facility managers should also consider glare, flicker, colour rendering and how the diffuser distributes light.

Quality lighting is not simply bright. It should make the space comfortable, functional and visually consistent.

4. Electrical and control compatibility

Commercial buildings may operate on different electrical systems, so voltage compatibility is important. Features such as 120–347V operation and 0–10V dimming allow fixtures to work with common commercial applications and lighting-control systems.

Motion sensors and dimming controls can also reduce energy consumption by lowering the light output when a space is unoccupied. But these controls need to communicate reliably with the fixture and driver.

A sensor is only valuable when it operates consistently and can be adjusted for the actual use of the space.

5. Adaptability

Facility conditions can vary considerably, even within the same building.

A classroom, corridor, office, storage room and maintenance area may each require a different light level or colour temperature. Fixtures with selectable wattages and colour temperatures allow the output to be adjusted during installation without purchasing a completely different product for every area.

This flexibility can simplify inventory, reduce ordering mistakes and make future replacements easier to manage.

6. Certification and verified performance

In Ontario, electrical products must carry a recognized certification or evaluation mark showing that they have been independently assessed for safety. The Electrical Safety Authority provides a list of recognized approval marks that buyers and contractors can verify before installation. Review Ontario’s recognized certification marks.

For commercial lighting, the DesignLights Consortium Qualified Products List is another useful resource. DLC qualification evaluates areas such as efficacy, quality of light, controllability, power quality, safety, warranty and supporting test documentation, not brightness alone. Certification does not replace proper project design, but it gives buyers an important level of technical verification.

Questions to ask before approving a lighting product

Before selecting fixtures for a commercial retrofit, organizations should ask:

  • What is the fixture’s tested efficacy in lumens per watt?
  • Is the product approved for use in Ontario?
  • Is the exact model listed by DLC when qualification is required?
  • What supports the stated lifetime and lumen-maintenance claim?
  • Is the fixture compatible with the building’s voltage?
  • Does it support dimming or occupancy controls?
  • Can the wattage and colour temperature be adjusted?
  • What does the warranty cover?
  • Who provides support if a fixture or driver fails?
  • Can a sample or pilot area be reviewed before the full installation?

These questions can reveal much more about product quality than the purchase price or initial brightness.

These specifications are important, but they are only one part of the project. The fixture still needs to be matched to the ceiling height, operating schedule, existing electrical system and activities taking place in the space.

Quality should be evaluated over years, not minutes

A lighting retrofit is a long-term facility investment.

The question should not only be whether the new fixture appears bright immediately after installation. The better questions are:

Will it maintain its performance? Will it reduce energy use without compromising the space? Will the controls operate reliably? Will support be available if something goes wrong?

When product quality is considered from the beginning, an LED retrofit can deliver more than a brighter building. It can provide dependable energy savings, fewer maintenance interruptions and a better environment for the people who use the facility every day.
